Q

Photosynthesis

A

The Primary Producers (bacteria, algae, phytoplankton) use energy captured by Chlorophyll (and ocean water) to convert inorganic carbon to biomass (organic carbon) which is food.

Q

How does Photosynthesis and Respiration relate to the Biological Pump?

A

Biological Pump takes organic carbon fixed by Photosynthesis and transports it into the deep ocean.

All of these organisms that undergo photosynthesis and respiration, as well as their waste products and detritus is categorized as POC. The Biological Pump transfers the POC from the surface ocean to the deep ocean.
