Macromolecular Measurements Flashcards
What are the major macromolecule classes and their monomers?
Protein - Amino Acids
Carbohydrates- Monosaccharides
Lipids - Glycerol, Isoprene, Acetate
DNA/RNA - Nucleotides
Examples of Monossacharides
Glucose, Fructose, Ribose, Galactose
Examples of Nucleotides
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
Why do Cells need Macromolecules?
Each macromolecule has an important role in the cell that provides function for life. “Building blocks of life”
How do we measure macromolecules? (4)
Extract (Aqueous or Organic Solvent)
Hydrolyze (Break up macromolecule into monomers)
Derivatize/Complex (Absorb Visible or UV light through reaction with another molecule)
Spectrophometer (Measure light absorbed by sample)
