Pigments Flashcards
Types of Pigments
Chlorophylls, Carotenoids, & Phycobilin
Similarity and Differences of Pigments
Chlorophylls - Absorb Blue & Red wavelengths; reflect green
Carotenoids - Absorb Blue; Reflect Orange and Red
Phycobilin - Absorb Red, Orange, Yellow, and Green Wavelengths
Why do Organisms have different pigments?
Organisms have different pigments to absorb energy from a wide range of wavelengths. This allows more sunlight to be converted into energy.
Why are Pigments good bio markers?
Their structure is preserved and can be traced to past particular origin due to its tetrapyrrole ring.
Importance of Conjugated Pi System of Pigments
Conjugated Pi Systems can absorb wavelengths of visible light. What is reflected is what we see.
