Respiration 2.0 Flashcards
What is anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration is a type of cellular respiration that happens without oxygen, where the partial breakdown of glucose releases less energy than aerobic respiration. It occurs in our cells when little to no oxygen is available, such as during intense physical exercise.
What is the chemical and word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose+Oxygen=Carbon Dioxide+Water+Energy
C6H1206+602=6CO2+6H20+Energy
What is the chemical and word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose=Lactic Acid+Energy
C6H12O6=C3H6O3+Energy
What are alveoli?
Alveoli(sing:alveolus)are tiny air sacs in the lungs, at the end of bronchioles, and the site of gas exchange.
What is an air sac?
An air sac is one of the tiny air-filled spaces in our lungs.
What are blood capillaries?
Blood capillaries are very tiny blood vessels wrapped around the alveoli.
What are some characteristics of alveoli?
Alveoli have thin walls, made of only one layer of cells. They also have a large surface area, and are surrounded by capillaries, which also have a single-cell thin wall.
Why do alveoli have these characteristics?
These characteristics make diffusion between them and blood capillaries easier.
How do blood capillaries surround the alveolus?
A blood capillary surrounds the alveolus, with its thin wall pressed tightly against the alveolus wall, both made of a single layer of thin cells.
