Paper chromatography! Flashcards
What is paper chromatography?
Paper chromatography is a way of separating mixtures of dissolved chemicals using special paper.
What is the paper used like?
Special paper, like filter paper is used.
What is a chromatograph?
A chromatograph is the results which show the separation of substances after carrying out chromatography.
why do the different colours separate?
The colours separate as the solvent dissolves them.
How does the solubility of substances affect this?
The solubility affects the distance before they are left behind.
What would be the most soluble substance?
The one whos particles are the furthest up.
What would be the least soluble?
The one whos particles are the furthest down/havent moved.
What is the mobile phase?
The phase that does move(like the solvent)
What is a stationary phase?
The phase that doesnβt move(like the paper)
What type of ink might not be soluble in water?
Some types of ink, like permanent marker pens, arenβt soluble in water. So, different solvents can be used, such as alcohol.
What does pure mean?
Pure means that there is just 1 colour band.
What does impure mean?
Impure means that there are multiple colour bands.
How to analyse a chromatogram?
Count the number of color bands.
