Atoms! Flashcards
What are atoms?
Atoms are tiny particles and the smallest unit of matter.
How small are atoms?
Atoms are so small that you cannot see them without using the most powerful microscope invented.
Where does the word atom come from?
Atom comes from the Greek word for βcannot be splitβ.
What are compounds made of?
Compounds are made of more than one type of atom.
What are elements made up o?
Elements are made up of only one type of atom.
What are sub-atomic particles?
Sub-atomic particles are even smaller atomic particles which make up an atom.
What are the 3 kinds of sub-atomic particles that make up an atom?
There are three kinds of subatomic particles: Protons, neutrons and electrons.
What is the nucleus?
The nucleus consists of closely grouped together protons and neutrons in the centre of an atom.
Describe the mass of the sub-atomic particles.
Protons and neutrons have the same mass while electrons have much less mass than them. In fact, electrons have almost no mass.
What are the electrical charges of the 3 sub-atomic particles?
*Protons have a positive electrical charge(+ve).
*Neutrons have no electrical charge(neutral).
*Electrons have a negative electrical charge(-ve).
What is an electrical charge?
An electrical charge is a property of an object which causes it to attract or repel other objects with a positive or negative charge.
