Magnetic field! Flashcards
What is a magnet?
A magnet is a material, usually metal, that will attract magnetic materials.
What does magnetic mean?
magnetic means attracted to a magnet
What do some magnetic materials include?
Magnetic materials include the metals iron, steel, nickel, and cobalt.
What are the two poles of a magnet?
Magnets have two poles, north and south.
What is a magnetic field?
A magnetic field, surrounding all magnets, is the area around a magnet, where the effects of the magnet can be detected.
Where is the magnetic field of a magnet strongest?
The magnetic field of a magnet is strongest at the poles.
How can you detect magnetic field?
You can see whether a magnetic material moves because of attraction or use a compass
How does a compass work in detecting magnetic field?
A compass has a magnetised needle that is free to move, which will turn and point in the direction of a magnetic field.
In which direction does a compass needle point in relation to the magnetic north and south poles?
A compass needle will always point away from the magnetic north pole and towards the magnetic south pole.
