Magnetic field lines! Flashcards
What are magnetic field lines?
Magnetic field lines are lines drawn with arrows to show to the shape and direction of a magnetic field.
What are the rules of magnetic field lines?
they:
*join opposite poles
*have arrows that point N-S
*must not touch each other
*must not cross each other
Where is the magnetic field strongest based on the magnetic field lines?
The magnetic field is strongest where the magnetic field lines are closest together.
If there are 2 magnets and one has a stronger magnetic field, how can you tell, by looking at the magnetic field lines, which one is stronger?
*All the field lines will be closer together
*The field lines will extend further from the magnet
How can you tell the direction a compass will point by looking at magnetic field lines?
The direction a compass will point, when it is in a magnetic field, is in the direction of the magnetic field lines.
Describe the forces between two magnets.
*Two north poles repel
*Two south poles repel
*A north and a south attract
What causes these forces?
These forces are due to the magnetic fields from each magnet.
How does the magnetic field cause the magnets to attract or repel?
Like poles repel each other because their magnetic field lines point in opposite directions between them, while opposite poles attract as their field lines align in the same direction, creating a force of attraction.
