Respiration Flashcards
What is the definition of respiration?
The process by which plant and animal cells release the chemical energy stored in glucose.
What is the energy released during respiration used for?
Muscle cell contraction
Cell division
Protein synthesis
Transmission of nerve impulses
What is glucose always converted into in the first stage of respiration?
Pyruvate (x2) and ATP (×2)
In fermentation in animal cells, what is pyruvate converted into?
Lactate (until oxygen becomes available)
In fermentation in yeast/plant cells what is pyruvate converted into?
Ethanol and carbon dioxide
In aerobic respiration in animal cells, what is pyruvate converted into?
Water, carbon dioxide and a large number of ATP
Where does the fermentation take place?
Cytoplasm
Where does the first stage of aerobic respiration take place?
Cytoplasm
Where does the second stage of aerobic respiration take place?
Mitochondrion
What is the function of ATP?
To transfer chemical energy from glucose to the cell.
