Other info Flashcards
How would you calculate the actual size of a cell?
Image size divided by magnification
What do you use to stain plant cells?
Iodine solution
How would you calculate the image size of a cell?
Actual size times by magnification
How would you calculate the magnification being used on a microscope?
Image size divided by actual size
What do you use to stain animal cells?
Methylene blue
Why are stains used?
To make cellular structures more visible under the microscope.
What is division of labour?
Division of labour is when cells in a multicellular organism are arranged into tissues to perform specific jobs to contribute to the organisms goal.
What are specialised cells?
Specialised cells are cells that are made to perform specific jobs.
Name a specialised cell and why it is one?
Red blood cell, this is a specialised cell because they have a protein called haemogoblin, oxygen is able to attach to this so the cell can carry oxygen around the body. The cells also have a specialised shape, they are biconcave this shape means they can carry lots of oxygen.
Name another specialised cell and why it is one?
Muscle cell, this is a specialised cell because they are held together in bundles that are able to pull together and make the muscle contract. When muscles contract it allows movement.
Name a specialised plant cell and what makes it one
Root hair cell, this is a specialised cell because they are specialised to absorb water from the soil, they have a long extension to help absorb as much water as possible.
Name another specialised plant cell and how it is one
Xylem cells, they are specialised cells because they lose many of the features usually seen in plant cells and instead make up a hollow tube. This helps the xylem efficiently transport water around the plant. The cells of xylem contain a strengthening material called lignin which helps support the plant.
