Producing New Cells Flashcards
What is the purpose of cell division?
Growth and repair
Stem cells are said to be…
Unspecialised, because they aren’t a specific type of cell
How are more stem cells made?
Self-renewal, where the cells divide and produce more of them.
What are 2 types of stem cells?
Embryonic stem cells - very early stage embryos
Tissue stem cells - parts of the body throughout life
What is the difference between embryonic stem cells and tissue stem cells?
Embryonic stem cells are capable of becoming any type of body cell.
Tissue stem cells can only become a few types of cell.
Why is the chromosome complement maintained during mitosis?
So that the daughter cells share the same function as the original cell.
Stages of mitosis
Chromatids line up across the equator.
Spindle fibres contract and chromatids are pulled apart.
Chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell
Nuclear membranes form
Cytoplasm divides
