Algal Bloom Flashcards
How does an algal bloom start?
Fertilisers are added to the soil and are washed into fresh water by the rain (leaching)
What is the effect of fertilisers leaching into fresh water?
An Algal bloom forms because they have lots of nutrients from the fertilisers.
What is the first effect of an Algal bloom in fresh water?
Algal bloom stops light from reaching plants below, which causes them to die.
What happens after the algal bloom has been there for some time?
Algal bloom uses up nutrients and dies.
What is the effect of the abundance of dead algae?
Bacteria increase in number as they use dead plants and algae as food
What effect does the abundance of bacteria have?
Bacteria use up most of the oxygen, causing the animals in the water to die
What does fertiliser do?
Increase soil nutrients
