Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
The chemical energy in glucose must be released by all through a series of enzyme-controlled reaction.
What is the energy released from breakdown of glucose used to generate?
ATP
What are ATPs used for?
muscle contraction
mitosis
protein synthesis
transmission of nerve impulses
What is the stage 1 of respiration?
Glucose is broken down into 2 pyruvate molecules and releasing enough energy to yield 2 ATP. This takes place in the cytoplasm and requires no oxygen.
What does further breakdown of glucose depend on in respiration?
The presence or absence of oxygen
What is the stage 2 of aerobic respiration?
Glucose(pyruvate) is broken down further into C02 and water and enough energy to yield 36 ATP in total producing 38. This takes place in the mitochondria
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen=CO2+Water+Energy
Number of Mitochondria would tell?
The higher the energy requirement of a cell the greater the number of mitochondria present in that cell
Why do Muscle cell contain many mitochondria?
They Contain many mitochondria as they require a lot of energy for muscle contraction.
Describe Fermentation in animal cells?
In absence of oxygen the animal cells glucose(pyruvate) are converted into lactate.
They yield only the initial 2 ATP
This takes in place in the cytoplasm
Write down the word equation for fermentation for both?
Glucose = lactate + energy
Glucose = CO2 + Ethanol + energy
