Resource management Flashcards
What is a resource
A stock or supply of something that has a value or a purpose.
What are the three most important resources
food, energy and water
What is undernutrition
A poorly balanced diet lacking in minerals and vitamins.
How can undernutrition affect a country
People need to be fed to be productive at work and contribute to the economic development of their country.
What is the imbalance in water supply mainly due to
Variations in climate and rainfall. Rainwater needs to be captured and stored in reservoirs or taken from rivers or aquifers deep underground. All of these are very expensive and require high levels of investment.
How is Energy needed for economic development
It powers factories and machinery and provides fuel for transport
Why does the UK import so much food?
Demand for greater choice and more exotic foods.
Uk climate is unsuitable for some production of some foods, such as cocoa, tea and bananas. Demand for seasonal produce such as strawberries and apples.
What is the impact of importing food
Food miles, transporting food by air is very expensive. Importing food also adds to our carbon footprint-the emission of co2 into the atmosphere.
What is agribusiness
Intensive farming aimed at maximising the amount of food produced. farms run as commercial buisnesses. They have high levels of investment, and use modern technology and chemicals.
What is organic produce
Grown without the use of chemicals.
Why is the demand for water rising
The growing population
more houses being built
an increase in the use of water intensive domestic appliances
What is water surplus
Where supply exceeds demand
What is a water deficit
Where demand exceeds supply.
Ways of managing water
The use of domestic water meters, increasing the use of recycled water
More efficient domestic appliances
What is re-usable water called
Grey water.
