Ecosystems Flashcards
What is a global scale ecosystem called
Biome
What are producers
Convert energy from the environment into glucose. They do this by photosynthesis
What are consumers
Get energy from the sugars produced by producers, eating plants basically.
What are decomposers
Break down plant or animal material and return the nutrients to the soil. e.g bacteria and fungi.
What is a food chain
Shows the direct links between producers and consumers in the form of a line.
What is a food web
Shows all connections between producers and consumers in a complex web.
What is nutrient cycling
Nutrients are foods that are used by plants and animals to grow. There are two main sources of nutrients-
Rainwater washes chemicals out of the atmosphere
weathered rock releases nutrients into the soil.
When plants or animals die, the decomposers help recycle the nutrients making them available once again for the growth of plants and animals-nutrient cycle.
Pond bottom
little oxygen and little light
pond surface
lots of oxygen and sunlight.
Example of natural change to an ecosystem
drought
Changes due to human activity
agricultural fertilisers, woods cut, hedgerows removed to increase field size.
Example of restoration of lake
Avington park lake, Winchester, Hampshire- 2014
Where is tundra found
Artic circle
