resistance to social influence Flashcards
What is social support?
People can resist pressure to conform or obey if they have an ally, someone supporting their point of view
Individuals who have support no longer fear being ridiculed, allowing them to avoid NSI
Research support (Conformity)?
In one of Asch’s variations, one confederate is asked to give the correct answer throughout
Conformity rate dropped to 5%
Research support (Obedience)?
In one of Milgram’s variations, ppt paired with two confederate teachers, who refused to take part and withdrew completely
Obedience dropped from 65% to 10%
What is Locus of control?
The extent to which people believe they have control over their own lives
What is an internal locus of control?
People believe what happens in their life is largely the result of their own behaviour and that they have control over their life
What is an external locus of control?
People believe that what happens to them is controlled by external factors and that they don’t have complete control over their life
Are Internal or external LOC more likely to resist social influence?
Internal
Research support for LOC (obedience)?
Oliner and Oliner (1998) interviewed non-Jewish survivors of WWII and compared those who protected Jews and who didn’t
Found that 406 rescuers were more likely to have internal LOC and 126 who followed orders were likely to have external
Research support for LOC (conformity)?
Spector (1983) found that of 157 students, those with internal LOC were less likely to conform, but only in situations of NSI
No difference between two groups for ISI
