LTM Flashcards
What are the components of the LTM and who suggested this?
Procedural- motor skills, no conscious effort to recall
Semantic- memory for general knowledge/facts, conscious recall, not time stamped
Episodic- personal memories- conscious recall, strength of memory depends on emotion at the time, time stamped
Suggested by Tulving
What is Clive Wearing’s case study?
Severe amnesia, can still play piano and remember meanings of words etc
Mainly episodic memory damaged, can remember he has kids but doesn’t know them
Strengths of LTM?
Research support- Clive Wearing, shows different parts of LTM, increases validity
Support from neurological studies- Tulving et al (1994) asked ppts to perform tasks while scanned- left side of prefrontal cortex semantic, right for episodic
Weaknesses of LTM?
Evidence from brain damaged patients- trauma may change behaviour, reduced validity
