What is a leading question?
when a question is phrased in such a way that it suggests a certain answer
What was Loftus and Palmer’s study(1974)?
45 students split into 5 groups of 9
Watched video and asked ‘How fast were the cars going when they hit / contacted / bumped / collided / smashed each other?’
Average for ‘contacted’ was 31.8mph
Average for ‘smashed’ was 40.5mph
L and P’s second study
150 students in 3 groups:
How fast were the cars going when they smashed into each other?
How fast were the cars going when they hit into each other?
control group
One week later asked back for interview
Asked ‘Did you see the broken glass?’
Smashed- 32% said yes
Hit- 14%
Control- 12%
What is post event discussion?
Any info discussed after the event has happened, witnesses can be easily influenced
Evaluation
Practical applications- has led to development of our legal system
Artificial tasks- Loftus and Palmer used video, less distressing than real crash
Doesn’t count for individual differences, e.g. age
Most lab based- demand characteristics
