Experimental method Flashcards
What does experimental design refer to?
The arrangement of groups of ppts in an experiment
What are the three types of experimental design?
Repeated measures
Independent groups
Matched pairs
What is repeated measures?
Same ppts take part in each condition
What is independent groups?
Different participants take part in each condition
What is matched pairs?
Pairs of ppts matched in terms of key variables, such as age, gender, socioeconomic status
How are groups assigned in independent groups?
Random allocation
What are order effects?
When participant performance in the second condition is affected by the first condition
Why are order effects an issue?
They can act as extraneous variables influencing the dependent variable, reducing the validity of the results
What do we do to resolve the issue of Order effects?
Counterbalancing- Half ppts do condition A then B, other half do B then A
