Resistance Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 ways that bacteria develop resistance
A
Alteration or bypassing of drug target
Altered access to drug’s target
Modification of drug activity
2
Q
What is transformation in regards to bacterial resistance to ABX
A
Uptake of fragments of environmental DNA from related bacterial species, recombine DNA directly into bacterial chromosomes
3
Q
What are Beta-lactamase
A
Antibiotic degradation: breaks down the core beta lactam ring of ABX destroying drug activity. Sulbactam or Tazobactam have beta lactamase inhibitors
4
Q
What is ESBL?
A
Extended spectrum beta lactamase: ability to inactivate all PCNs and early generation cephlasporins
