Hard statistics such as statistics on births and marriages

Soft statistics such as statistics on crime, poverty and unemployment

A collection of government surveys published annually until 2012
What is the UK census?
A survey of every household every 10 years that is a legal requirement to fill out
What are non-official statistics?
Statistics collected by organisations other than the government
What is a document?
Written text that can be personal or official
What forms can documents be in?
Expressive or formal
What is content analysis?
A method of systematically analysing a communication to understand its meanings
What are the problems with documents?
Can be difficult to understand, might be fakes, might contain lies
How do sociologists compare different secondary documents?
Look for similarities and differences between different times, cultures and groups
