Research Methods- Observations Flashcards
What happens in a covert observation?
The researcher doesn’t tell the group they’re being observed
What happens in an overt observation?
When the group is aware of the research and they know who the researcher is
What is a participant observation?
When the researcher actively involves themself in group
What is a non-participant observation?
When the researcher observes the group but isn’t actively part of the group
What are the advantages of a participant observation?
- Researcher is right where the action is so can check out the dynamics of a group from close up
- Allows you to research the workings of deviant groups
- First-hand insight in natural real-life settings
- People can’t mislead researcher
What are disadvantages of participant observations?
- Researcher may get too involved and find it hard to objectively observe group
- Overt research may influence behaviour of group
- Can’t repeat research so lacks reliability
- Ethical and practical problems
- Hard work, time-consuming and expensive
What are advantages of a non-participant observation?
- Researcher can be more objective about group’s behaviour
- Have to be very inconspicuous if observing deviant groups
What are disadvantages of a non-participant observation?
- Stops researcher getting where action is
- May influence behaviour of group
