Q

What are the advantages of a participant observation?

A
  • Researcher is right where the action is so can check out the dynamics of a group from close up
  • Allows you to research the workings of deviant groups
  • First-hand insight in natural real-life settings

Q

What are disadvantages of participant observations?

A
  • Researcher may get too involved and find it hard to objectively observe group
  • Overt research may influence behaviour of group
  • Can’t repeat research so lacks reliability
  • Ethical and practical problems
  • Hard work, time-consuming and expensive
