Q

What is an overt observation?

A

This is where the participant knows that they are being observed.

They have given their consent and will know what is happening

Q

What is non-participant observation?

A

Non-participant observation is when the observer remains outside the group and simply watches their behaviour.

Q

What is a natural experiment?

A

Natural experiments are studies where the experimenter has no control over the IV(the thing you change), so the DV (the result of what you changed) is simply measured as the effect of an IV.

16
Q

Two features of a quasi experiment?

A
  • some experimental control
  • lacks full randomisation.
17
Q

What is a strength of participant observation?

A

This type of observation allows the observer to get a closer look at the group and their behaviour.

18
Q

What is a lab experiment?

A

A lab experiment is a highly controlled experiment.

19
Q

What are the advantages of a Quasi experiment?

A
  • Allows cause - effect
  • It can be easy to set up because the researcher doesn’t have to set up much
20
Q

What are the three different types of interviews?

A
  1. Strutcured
  2. Unstructured
  3. Semi-structured
21
Q

What is a structured interview?

A

A pre-set list of questions you are going to ask, you do not change these at all.

22
Q

What is a natural experiment?

A

A natural experiment is an observational study where researchers exploit naturally occurring conditions for analysis.

23
Q

What is a controlled observation?

A

This is an observation that takes place in a lab.

The researcher pre-determines and controls the study variables and determines the location, the time, the participants, and the tools used to complete the study.

24
Q

What are the disadvantages of a Quasi experiment?

A
  • Researcher has no control of the IV
  • It can be really difficult to find the right situation, or the right people.
25
Q

What are the different types of observational techniques?

A
  • Controlled observations
  • Naturalistic observations
  • Participant observation
26
Q

What are the 4 different experiment types?

A
  1. Lab experiment
  2. Field experiment
  3. Quasi experiment
  4. Natural experiment
27
Q

What are the disadvantages of a lab experiment?

A
  • Could be biased
  • The behaviours are not natural
  • Demand characteristics
28
Q

What are the advantages of a lab experiment?

A
  • You can keep track of all the factors.
  • Accurate results / higher validity
  • More reliable
  • Easily replicable
  • Easier to establish cause and effect
