Biopsychology P2 Flashcards

What is the central nervous system?
The CNS is made up of the brain and spinal chord.
It combines information from around the body and coordinates activity around the body.
What is the peripheral nervous system?
The peripheral nervous system transmits info to and from the CNS.
What is the somatic nervous system?
The somatic nervous system transmits info to and from the senses and directs voluntary muscle movement.
What is the autonomic nervous system?
The autonomic nervous system transmits information to and from organs, including involuntary.
Sympathetic NS: increases bodily activity (fight or flight)
Parasympathetic NS: decreases bodily activity (rest and digest)
What are sensory neurones?
Sensory neurons carry nerve impulses to the CNS
They are all over the body
When these nerve impulses reach the brain, they are translated into the 5 senses.
What are relay neurones?
Relay neurons are found in the brain and spinal cord and allow sensory and motor neurons to communicate.
Relay neurons are found between sensory input and motor output/response.
What are motor neurones?
Motor neurones control muscle movements.
They are found in the CNS.
When stimulated they release neurotransmitters that bind to the receptors on muscles to trigger a response, which lead to movement.
What are the 5 glands in the endocrine system?
The glands in the endocrine system are:
- Pituitary
- Adrenal
- Pancreas
- Testes
- Ovaries
What is the pituitary gland?
The pituitary gland is the “master gland” and regulates the rest of the endocrine system.
What is the adrenal gland?
The adrenal gland is in charge of the release of adrenaline.
What is the pancreas in charge of?
The pancreas regulates blood sugar levels with insulin and glucagon.
What are the 4 different hormones you need to know?
- Adrenaline
- Testosterone
- Melatonin
- Oxytocin
What is adrenaline?
Adrenaline activates the fight or flight response.
What is testosterone?
Testosterone regulates sex drive, sperm, bone mass, muscle mass, fat distribution and the production of red blood cells.
What does melatonin do?
Melatonin regulates the sleep cycle.
