research methods lessons 12-15 Flashcards
what is nominal data
data in separate categories
what is ordinal data
data ordered in some way
what is interval data
data using equal intervals
what is quantitative data
data measured in quantities including closed qs and a tally
evaluation of quantitative data
advantages: easier to analyse and more objective so less bias
disadvantages: lacks validity and meaning as just yes and no
what is qualitative data
information that is lengthy and has detail
evaluation of qualitative data
advantages: can gain lots of data, and is high in validity
disadvantages: unreliable as data won’t be repeated, subjective.
what is a meta analysis
combining results that is reviewed together. can be prone to publication bias as researcher may leave out negative results.
what are the measures of central tendency
mean median mode
what are the measures of dispersion
range and standard deviation
types of graphs
bar charts
histograms
line graphs
scatter diagrams
distribution
positive skew is when most data is at left
negative skew is when most data is at right
three reasons to do sign test
looking for a difference in data
looking at paired or related data
data is nomial
how to do sign test
state hypothesis: directional and tailed
count number of sign differences
select smaller number of signs
compare s to critical value from table
equal to or less than for significance
