Q

evaluation of top down approach

A

DIS: top down profiling only applies to certain crimes such as murder and rape and not to burglaries as the crime scene doesn’t reveal much.
The organised or disorganised distinction was developed based on interviews with serial killers which is a small unrepresentative sample

Q

what is geographical profiling

A

Geographical profiling analyses the locations of crimes to identify patterns and predict where an offender lives, works, or socialises. It assumes offenders commit crimes in familiar areas, with earlier offenses often closer to their base. Offenders may act as marauders (close to home) or commuters (traveling away)

Q

evaluation of bottom up approach

A

ADV: psychologists argue bottom up is more scientific that top down because it is more grounded with evidence. bottom up can also be applied to more crimes that top down.
DIS: psychologist found chem students found more accurate offender profile that senior detectives which implies bottom up is just common sense and guess work
