Research Methods Flashcards
What is random sampling
Type of lottery
E.g- names from a hat
Overall population studied wouldn’t be representative
What is systematic sampling
Probability sampling
Statistical method
E.g- picking every 3rd person
What is stratified sampling
Random sampling
Researchers divide their population into smaller groups (sampling frames) based on factors such as characteristics, then using systematic sampling to select the final sample
What is purposive sampling
Researchers choose individuals or cases that fit the nature of the research
Occurs when researchers choose a particular group or place to study as its known to be of the type wanted
Snowball sampling
Non probability sampling
Researchers pick a small group of acquainted individuals to start off, then expand this by having previous individuals recruit others
Sample starts small then gets bigger
Volunteer sampling
Variation on snowball sampling
The researcher may advertise for volunteers through the internet, magazines or social media
The volunteered group may not be representative
What is opportunity sampling
Means making the most of situations or opportunities in which the he population is likely to be found
Obtained by asking members of the population if interest if they would ale part in the study
