National Identity Flashcards
What is national identity
The identity of a country
A sense of nation as a cohesive whole, represented by distinctive traditions, culture and language. But also how a person sees themselves
Anderson (1983)
Argues that a nation is an imagined community as members of a nation will never meet most of their members.
Nationality is constructed through symbols. E.g- the flag, national holidays and festivals.
Sardar (2002)
We are in the middle of a global identity crisis which could be due to globalisation and brexit
Kumar (2003)
Unlike the Scots, Welsh and Irish, the English find it difficult to say who they are
A.H Halsey
The americanisation of our culture means that itβs increasingly difficult to pinpoint Britishness. Making it difficult to be uniquely British
Howe (2000)
Say that our British identity is stronger as people can now say they are black and British
What is the postmodernist view on national identity
They argue that national identity is becoming less significant in todays globalised society
Hall (1999)
Identified 3 different reactions to globalisation:
1) cultural homogenisation-where all countries become similar
2) cultural hybridity- shared cultures
3) cultural resistance- countries resisting global culture and become more nationalistic
