Define culture
The entire way of life of a particular society (unites people)
Define value
Beliefs and ideas that society sees as important and the majority accept them
e.g-honesty, fairness
Define Norms
An expected pattern of behaviour that are based on values of culture
E.g- queuing and using cutlery
Define cultural diversity
A variety of cultures found in a diverse society with varying norms and values
What is a subculture
A culture within a culture
Define cultural hybridity
A merging of two or more cultures
What is cultural relativism
The idea that the values, knowledge and behaviour of people must be understood within their own cultural context
Define popular culture
Cultural products and activities that are enjoyed by the majority of people.
Seen negatively as mass culture
What is high culture
High status cultural activities which sociologists argue are becoming more accessible to all

High culture is linked to the power of the group that supports it (linked to upper class)
Consumer culture
Excessive consumption is a norm, shopping is a goal linked to status
What is global culture?
Cultures becoming universal/global
(McLuhan)
What is Globalisation
Cultures are no longer steerage but are connected
E.g- mcdonaldisation
Hebdige
Argued subcultures can be perceived as negative and subversive
