Newman (2006)
Argued that hwy there are very few tv dramas that concentrate realistically on the everyday lives of working class people, they are often portrayed as unflattering on pitying
Devereux (2008)
Argues that working class people are seen as falling into 2 main categories
There are positive portrayals of happy and deserving poor. Contrasted by the negative images of those on benefits
Dodd and Dodd
Presents evidence of both continuity and change in the media’s representation of the working class in eastenders.
They argue that the show has managed to introduce some elements of realism (e.g unemployment, drugs, suicide, rape and crime)
However there is also a nostalgic and unrealistic portrayal of a working class community as a supportive communal environment
Owen Jones
“The demoralisation of the working class”
Argues that the media use the term chav has come to represent a way of condemning working class people/culture
Jones uses the term chavtainment to refer to tv shows that present working class people as “slothful, aggressive people”
He says working class people have gone from the “salt of the earth” to the “scum of the earth”
Golding and Middleton (1982)
Examined media generated moral panics about welfare abuse. They found that welfare abuse was only seen as newsworthy when it was connected with other issues (e.g crime/sex)
They said that they mediated demonises certain sections of the underclass
The poor are either deserving or undeserving
Price (2014)
Uses the term poverty porn to describe shows portraying the poorest in our society intended to exploit the poor and shock the audience
Marxist view of ethnicity (media)
Argues that these stereotypes serve to promote ruling class ideologies and creates a “false class consciousness”
Nairn (1988)
Media representations of the royal family is like a soap opera and is linked to national identity
Reiner (2010)
When people are shown as having huge amounts of wealth, their achievements are celebrated
