Easthorpe (1990)
Noted 3 stereotypes of men in the media:
1) men having strength, competitive spirit, aggression and violence
2) The new or metrosexual man- expressing emotions
3) A type of retributive masculinity of traditional masculine strength
Ferguson: forever feminine (1983)
Argued that women’s magazines promoted traditional ideas of femininity
Whannel (2002)
Analysed media images of David beckham as an example of both metrosexual and retributive masculinity
Tuchman (2008)
Argued that the narrow range of roles for women amounted to their “symbolic annihilation”
Bristol fawcett society (2008)
Found that not 30% of the main characters in CBeebies were women
Glascock (2001)
describes portrayals of strong independent women in the media (e.g- Diana in Wonder Woman)
Westwood (1999)
Offers an argument for change in representation of gender and used in he concept of transgressive female roles to describe portrayals they have gone beyond gendered expectations
Gauntlet
- says that gender roles seemed to become increasingly equal and non stereotyped since the 1990s and men and women are now shown to have similar skills/talents
- but he notes that men still tend to take leading roles and act as the hero and women are less likely to get roles as they age, despite equality turning a corner, it seems to have plateaued
Naomi wolf- the beauty myth
Argued that the fashion and beauty industries are exploiting women. She says that “women should have the choice to do whatever we want with our faces and bodies”
She argues for a relaxation of normative standards of beauty
