Research into conformity (Asch lines) Flashcards
description of Asch’s lines
aim- will people conform in an ambiguous task
sample- 123 male undergrads
procedure- match the standard line to comparison line
6 confederates + 1 real ppt
real ppt was 2nd to last to give answer
results-
37% mean conformity
5% conformed every trail
25% remain independent
conclusion- ppl conform to avoid standing out from the crowd
evidence against- lacks temporal validity (Aschs Lines)
evidence against comes from perin and spencer
the study was repeated in Britain years later and 1/396 conformed
people don’t conform as much as Aschs study suggested
“child of its time”
lacks external validity
evidence against- low ecological validity
conducted in a laboratory
doesn’t represent real life as the ppt cannot question the confederates on why they were giving the wrong answer.
meaning the results can’t generalise to real life
evidence against- deadman characteristics
conducted in a laboratory
they may have realised the true aim of experiment and changed their behaviour
low internal validity
evidence to support- high internal
conducted in a laboratory
extraneous variables contolled (like lightening)
high internal validity
evidence to support- replicable
conducted in a laboratory
easy to replicate
everything was standardised
the variables where able to be changed ( task difficulty)
