agentic state Flashcards
agentic state description
a mental state where you are more likely to obey and order because you see yourself as having no personal responsibility for your behaviour as you are acting on behalf of an authority figure.
agentic shift description
we shift from the autonomous state to the agentic state. we don’t take responsibility and view it as “just doing what i’m told”
evidence for - milgram
people said only 1/1000 ppl would continue to 450v
when an authority figure who would take responsibility was involved 65% of ppt went to 450v
representing the agentic state
this supports the shift to agentic state
evidence against- individual differences
although 65% did, many did not
some personality types are more susceptible to the “agentic state”
meaning the explanation is limited
evidence against- Naxi Germans
nazi german police shot 101 civilians
they were told they did not have to do this
this showed they obeyed despite still being autonomous
meaning not all obedience can be explained by the agentic state
