aim- to rest whether a minority group where more likely to influence a majority group into giving an incorrect based if they where consistent in their views
sample- 172 female, 4 ppt, 2 confederates
procedure- series of 36 clearly blue slides, asked to state what colour the slides where
consistant- the 2 confederates said green every time
inconsistent- the 2 confederates said green 24 times
results
control- 0.25% wrong
inconsistent- 1.25% wrong
consistent- 8.42% wrong
conclusion- if a minority wants to influence a majority they must remain consistent
evidence for- laboratory
conducted in a lab
high controls on extraneous variables
e.g. lighting
high internal validity
evidence against- low ecological validity
conducted in a laboratory
artificial setting
knew they were a part of a study (eye test)
findings may not generalise to real life
evidence against- high demand characteristics
conducted in a lab
ppt knew they where being tested
may have behaved unnaturally
reduced internal validity
evidence against- deception
deceiving and deliberately misleading ppts
ppt felt embarrassed after learning some where confederates
goes against ethical code of conduct
can’t gain informed consent
in defence of moscovici, he needed to deceive them to gain realistic results
evidence against- mock jury
had people decide on amount of compensation for a ski accident
the confederate suggested an alternative pov, this has no influence
when they showed flexibility and compromised it did have an influence
those seen and inflexible and rigid will have less influence
