description of zimbardo
aim- to see if ppl with conform to roles of prisoner and guard in mock prison
sample- 24 male volunteers (emotionally stable)
procedure-
.prisoners where arrested, blind folded, strip searched, given a number, smock, no underwear
. guards- khaki uniforms, baton, reflective sunglasses, were referred to as correctional officer
. zimbardo- superintended
rule- guards where told not to use physical punishment and maintain order
results- the study was stopped after 6 days
guards became abusive, woke prisoners up repeatedly in the night, made them clean loo with bare hands, isolated them
prisoners rebelled on day 2, they became anxious and subdued and depressed, 5 left early
conclusion- guards and prisoners lost sense of identity and conformed to social rules
