Research designs Flashcards
a research design is
the overall strategy that a researcher chooses to investigate the research problem and test their hypothesis.
Repeated measures design can be testing
2 conditions at once
concurrently
Repeated measures design
participants are only compared
compared to thrm selves and few people are needed
Repeated measures design
caue they have more than 1 set there are MORE
confounding varibles and lower internal validity
example about concurrently
has to remember set of words, 1 group is about childhood, 1 about adulthood
see whayt group comes up more
independent sample design
people are randomly
allocated to a conditon
independent sample design
order effetcs are
controlled and demand characteristics are less likly since people dont know the hypothesis
independent sample design
some material (word list)
can be reused with another variable (music) altered
matched pair design
participants are pre
tested regarding variables and split evenly (based on tests results)
variable called matching variable is controlled
what happens in repeated measures design
Same participants used in each condition
what happens in independant measures design
Different participants in each condition
repreated measures design advantages
Participates are only compared to themselves (reducing confounding variables)
Participant variables are controlled
Less participants are needed (easier, cheaper, quicker)
repreated measures design disadvantages
The order effects are more common (boredom, fatigue, better due to practice), but this can be improved by counter balancing
More likelihood of demand characteristics
Participant attrition is more likely (people dropping out)
Independant samples design dsadvantages
More of an impact from participant variability
what happens in Independant samples design
Different participants in each condition
