Research cycle and scientific method Flashcards
what is research?
systematic investigation
Intuition
A gut feeling
Authority
Relying on knowledge obtained from an authority figure without evaluating it yourself
Tenacity
information accepted because it has always been believed to be true .
Empirical
Information accepted by direct observation
Rational
Information accepted based on logic
what are the methods of acquiring knowledge?
different ways that people use to discover answers; rational, empirical, tenacity, authority, intuition and scientific method
scientific method
systematic approach to finding answers: starting with a set of observations, producing a general question/ answer, being able to reproduce the answer.
What is the difference between apllied and basic research
Applied :research aimed at solving problems, providing answers to questions or practical problems
Basic: research that answers theoretical questions, gathering knowledge for the sake of gathering knowledge.
What is a hypothesis?
a statement describing the relationship between variables, has to be logical, testable, directional, specific and refutable.
Prediction
predect a set of possible outcomes based on observations or hypothess by deductive reasoning .
formulate a hypothesis from this statement “Plants need sunlight to grow because they use light to perform photosynthesis, which produces the energy they need to survive and thrive”
hypothesis: If a plant receives more sunlight, then it will grow taller and healthier than a plant that receives less sunlight because it can perform more photosynthesis.
independent variable
manipulated variable, determined by the experimental design, known in advance, determined by the treatment conditions, deduction
dependent variable
responding variable, measured in each of the treatment conditions, determined during the course of the experiment, induction
