correlational research strategy Flashcards
correlational research strategy
establishes a relatioship between variables, one group 2 scores, describes the nature of the relationship, no manipulation, does not determine cause and effect
information from a scatterplot
direction : +/-
form: linear/monotonic
strength: correlation coefficient =+1 or -1
pearson correlation r
plot numerical scores: quantative variables
interval or ratio scale
used for relationship of linear related variables
spearman correlation p
used for monotonic variable relationships, transform the data and arrange by its rank order
statistically significant correlation
coefficient of determination, % of change in one variable accounted for by changing the other variable => shared variance :r^2
test re-test reliability
function of correlational research, scores at time 1 must be the same as scores at time 2
concurrent validity
function of correlational research, use correlation to show that a new test is as reliable as the established one
divergent validity
function of correlational research, to assess opposing constructs, expect strong negative correlations between score from each group
advantages of correlational research strategy
high exterval validity: recording what exists naturally, no manipulaiton of any variables
disadvantages of correlational research
correlation does not mean causation , directionality problem: relationship may exist is not clear which causes the other
