Research and Evaluation Flashcards
Research in the Design Process
Evaluating an existing product.
Analysing a design brief.
Refining a design proposal.
Evaluating a design proposal.
Primary Research
Facts which have come from an original first-hand account. Such as a questionnaire’s results.
Secondary Research
Interpretation of second-hand information, such as magazines, internet, etc.
6 Research Methods
Comparisons.
Questionnaires.
Surveys.
Test and Test Rigs.
User Trials and Trips.
Questionnaires
Great for quickly surveying many people. Can include specific questions.
User Trip
The designer uses a product under careful test conditions. Great for evaluating competitor products and prototypes.
User Trial
A real user uses a product under careful test conditions. Great for evaluating competitor products and prototypes.
Test and Test Rigs
Perform physical tests on products and prototypes. Machines can repeat movements thousands of times and simulate whole-life abuse.
Testing is often expensive, destructive but reliable.
Comparisons
Comparing: Features, Price, Ergonomics, Size, Aesthetics.
Stages:
Identify the products to compare.
Plan which factors are most appropriate to compare.
Create a table of results.
Analyse the results and write a conclusion/summary of your findings.
