Coatings Flashcards
1
Q
Chrome Plating
A
An electroplating technique where a very thin layer of chromium is applied to metal.
Aesthetic reasons, corrosion resistance, increase surface hardness, easier to clean.
2
Q
Galvanising
A
Iron or steel parts are submerged into a bath of molten zinc. The zinc binds to iron.
Corrosion resistance.
Galvanised products have a mottles camouflage-like pattern on them. Called ‘spangles’.
Used to protect railing, fences, nails, etc.
3
Q
Dip Coating
A
Hot metal is dipped into thermoplastic powder. The plastic melts and coats the metal entirely.
Corrosion resistance, colouring the metal, adding grip or a more pleasant surface to the metal, impact resistance.
