Res And Digestion Flashcards
Absorptive cells
Cell on the surface of villi of the small intestine and luminal surface of the large intestine that is characterized by having microvilli; secretes digestive enzymes and absorbs digestive materials on its free surface
Accessory organs
Primarily glands located outside the digestive tract that secrete fluids into it.
Adventitia
Outermost covering of any organ or structure that is properly derived fro outside the organ and does not form an integral part of the organ
Aveolar duct
Part of the respiratory passage beyond a respiratory bronchiole from its arise alveolar sacs and alveoli.
Absorption
The movement of molecules out of the digestive tract and into the circulation or into the lymphatic system.
Alveoli
Small, air filled chambers where gas exchange between air and the blood take place .
Amylase
Breaks down covalent bonds between glucose molecules in starch and other polysaccharides to produce the disaccharides maltose and isomaltose
Anabolism
The energy requiring process by which small molecules are joined to form larger molecules
Catabolism
The energy releasing process by which large molecules are broken into small molecules
Metabolism
The total of all the chemical reactions that occur in the body
Asthma attack
Contraction of the smooth muscle in the bronchi and bronchioles can decrease in the diameter , resulting in increased resistance to airflow , which greatly reduces air movement .
Trachea
Or windpipe, is a membraneous tube attached to the larynx
Beta cells
Help make up the islets in the pancreas, and secrete insulin.
Bilirubin
Is released into the plasma . Binds to albumin and is transported to liver cells . There is free bilirubin ,and conjugated bilirubin
