-food sample

-traditional water bath
-thermometer

What is the method for Benedict’s test for sugars?
-set up a water bath using a Bunsen burner
-put some of the food sample into a test tube
-add a few drops of Benedict’s solution to the sample in the test tube
-put the test tube at a minimum 80 degrees C for about 5 mins
-Note down a colour change.
What colour does Benedict’s solution turn in the presence of sugar?
Blue to yellow/orange
What is the apparatus for the Iodine test for Starch?
-food sample
-test tube
-iodine solution
-pipettes
What is the method for the iodine test for starch?
-put some of the food sample into a test tube
-add a few drops of Iodine solution
-note down any colour changes
What colour does Iodine turn starch?
It turns the starch blue/black
What is the apparatus for the Biuret’s solution test for protein?
-a test tube
-10cm3 measuring cylinder
-Biuret solution
What is the method for the Biuret’s solution test for protein?
-put some food sample into a test tube
-add 1cm3 of Biuret’s solution
-shake the tube gently
-note any colour change
What colour does protein turn to in the presence of Biuret’s solution?
It goes from blue to violet
