Required Practical: Infrared Radiation Flashcards
What emits infrared radiation?
Everything
But mostly by hot objects
Leslie’s cube
4 different surfaces:
Shiny metallic
White
Shiny black
Matte black
Step 1 of finding infrared emission
Fill Leslie’s cube with hot water
Step 2 of finding infrared emission
Point infrared detector at each of the 4 surfaces
Record amount of infrared radiation emitted
Keeping distance the same
Results of infrared emission experiment
Most infrared emission:
Nate black
Shiny black
White
Shiny metallic
Least inferred:
Step 1 of infrared absorption experiment
Put infrared heater between 2 metal plates
1 metal plate = shiny metallic
1 metal plate = Matte black surface
Drawing pins in between
Step 2 to find infrared absorption experiment
Switch on the infrared heater
So metal plates heat up due to absorbing infrared radiation
Time how long it takes for Vaseline to melt/fall off
Results of experiment to find infrared radiation absorption
Matte black side pin fell off first = absorbed more infrared = heated up quicker
Shiny metallic surface fell off next
Conclusions of both of these experiments
Matte black absorbs and emitted infrared fastest and most
Whereas shiny surfaces tend to reflect them
