Articles of Confederation
Key points
- the first governing document of the united states
- an utter failure
- “League of friendship” among colonies
- states were supreme over national gov
- very hard to pass laws
- fed gov had very little power
Articles of Confederation
over-arching theme
The first governing document of the colonies in a post-british society. Out of fear of another tyrannical rule from a dictator, they made sure the states had much more power than the federal government. The alliance between the states was weak at best, and was worsened by the lack of similarities (with laws, currency, etc.) The articles also left out both a federal judiciary and executive branch. Leaving a unicameral legislative.
Articles of Confederation
impact
- The Annapolis Convention was called to end the Articles of Confederation
- Shay’s Rebellion showed how weak the federal government was (as it couldn’t send troops to settle the rebellion)
Articles of Confederation

- “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…”
- claims the natural rights of the colonists were being denied
- long list of grievances against the king
The Declaration of Independence
over-arching theme
A “break-up letter” from the United States to King George, as well as shown to the world. Its concepts consist of ideas borrowed from John Locke and Baron de Montesquieu (social contract and natural rights). The longest section is the list of grievances against the king including: lack of colonist rep in gov, high taxes, threatening army, etc. The document also includes many of the enlightenment theories and beliefs.
The Declaration of Independence
impact
The United States is now publicly separated from Britain, and the world knows it (well… the US still kinda has to win the war). It rallied the troops at home to fight, and to secure foreign allies to help fight the British off
The Declaration of Independence
in response to
