Reproductive systems Flashcards
what separates the two scrotum into two compartments?
scrotal septum
what is each testis suspended by?
spermatic cord
what are the two tissue layers of the testis?
tunica vaginalis (outer)and tunica albuginea
what are seminiferous tubules made from?
sertoli cells
what are the roles of the sertoli cells?
secrete nutrients for developing spermatozoa
what is mitosis?
diploid spermatogonia duplicate forming diploid primary spermatocytes
what is meiosis 1?
primary spermatocytes divide into 2 haploid daughter cells (secondary spermatocytes)
what is meiosis 11?
secondary spermatocytes divide to form 4 haploid daughter cells (spermatids)
what is spermatogenesis?
development of spermatids into mature spermatozoa
what are the endocrine functions?
leydig cells between seminiferous tubules secrete testosterone close to capillary
what happens if the testes get too cold?
drawn closer to the body by the cremaster muscle
what is the epididymis?
spermatozoa are stored and matured in the tail
what is the role of the vas deferent?
stores and conveys spermatoza
what is the role if the seminal vesicle?
joins vas deferens to form ejaculatory duct where sperm and seminal fluid are mixed 60% of semen volume
what is the role of the prostrate gland?
surrounds prosthetic urethra, milky acidic fluid , 30% of semen volume, role in activating sperm
what is in the fluid released from the prosthetic gland?
citrate, enzymes and prostatic specific antigen
what is prostatitis?
pain when urintaing and ejaculating
what is the treatment for prostatitis?
antibiotics, painkiler, alpha adrenergic blockers
what are the symptoms of prostrate cancer?
during coughing and sneezing, blood enter urine
what are the roles of the bulbourethal gland?
below prostate gland, mucus like secretion enters uretha during arousal to neutralise urine residue
what happens during erection?
arteries dilate, penis becomes distended, compression of veins reduced outward blood flow
what is emission?
sympathetic control, release of small volume of seminal fluid before ejaculation
what is ejaculation?
contraction of bulbospongiosus muscle
what are the functions of semen?
transport medium, nutrients, chemicals which activate and protect the sperm
