what is the peritoneum?
double layered serous membrane that covers abdominal and pelvic cavities
what does the parietal peritoneum do?
covers the body wall
what does the visceral peritoneum do?
covers the organs
what are intraperitoneal organs?
fully covered by the peritoneum
what are retroperitoneal organs?
pushed up against abdominal wall and partially covered by peritoneum
what is a mesentery?
double layer of visceral peritoneum that attaches an organ to the body wall
what is a omentum?
double layer of visceral peritoneum that attaches one organ to another
what are the layers of the GI tract?
mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, serosa
what is the arterial supply to the GI tract?
celiac trunk, superior/inferior mesenteric artery
what is segmentation?
cycles of contraction that fragment the bolus and mix it with digestive juices
what is the defecation reflex?
simulated then faeces are in the rectum
what is an example of 2 exocrine glands involved in the GI tract?
salivary and pancreas
what are two examples of endocrine glands of the GI tract?
pancreas and neuroendocrine cells of the stomach
what is the function of salivary amylase?
carb digestion, serous fluid washes oral cavity, mucin lubrication
what do parietal cells release?
hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor
what do chief cells release?
pepsinogen
what do enteroendocrine cells release?
gastrin
what does HCL in gastric juice do?
kills microbes, breaks down connective tissue in meat and plants, converts pepsinogen to pepsin
what does the pancreas release?
1.5L of pancreatic juices/day
what do acini cells do?
secrete propetidases, amylase lipase
what do duct cells secrete?
water and sodium bicarbonate
what are the 4 lobes of the liver?
right, left, caudate, quadrate
what causes cholecystokinin to be released?
presence of fats and proteins in the duodenum
what does CCK do?
gall bladder releases bile, spinchter of odds relaxes
