Reproductive System Flashcards
Gametes
A mature sex cell (sperm or oocyte)
Mitosis
The ´ duplication division ´ process of cells, allowing the cells to clone their exact genetic material as a way of reproduction.
Meiosis
The ´ reduction division ´ process is in which a cell undergoes two divisions (meiosis 1 and meiosis 2) where the ramification is the creation of a gamete with only 23 chromosomes.
Zygote
Fusing of egg and sperm
Semen
Fluid in which sperm are carried out of the penis
Bulbouretheral Glands (Cowper´s Glands)
Pea-sized organs that lie posterior to the prostate on either side of the urethra
What do the autonomic nerves release during sexual arouse?
Nitric Oxide (NO)
Interstitial Cells
- Secrete male sex hormones
Luteinizing hormone (LH)
Controls production of testosterone in males (although present in females too)
Follicle Stimulating hormone
Promotes production of sperm in males (although present in both males and females)
Testosterone
It is essential for the development of certain organs and for stimulating puberty in males. Despite being the main sex hormone in males, it is also present in females.
Ovarian Cycle (Nonpregnate)
Oogenesis produces oocytes in females and polar bodies. FSH causes the maturation of a follicle that secretes estrogen and some progesterone before ovulation. After ovulation LH from the anterior pituitary converts the follicle into the corpus luteum.
