Lymphatic and Immune Systems Flashcards
1
Q
First, Second and Third Line of Defense
A
1st line of defense: Physical barriers (like skin) that stop the pathogens from entering
2nd line of defense: Non specific innate response
3rd line of defense: Acquired immunity
2
Q
What type of immunity are T cells responsible for?
A
Cell-Mediated Immunity:
- The target for destruction cells that are presenting a specific antigen
3
Q
What type of immunity are B cells responsible for?
A
Humoral Immunity:
- Activated B cells become plasma cells that produce antibodies
4
Q
Active Immunity
A
- Develops naturally after an individual is infected with a pathogen
5
Q
Passive immunity
A
- Individual is given prepared antibodies via an injection
- Temporary
6
Q
APC (antigen presenting cell)
A
- Help T cells recognize antigens
7
Q
Prions
A
- Infectious particles made strictly of proteins
- Cause a group of degenerative diseases of the nervous system
8
Q
Viruses
A
- Intracellular parasites, meaning they need to use a host cell to reproduce
- Not made of cells
- Composed of an outer capsid and inner core
9
Q
HIV/AIDS
A
- Originated in Africa
Phases: Acute phase (asymptomatic, highly infections, CD4 T cells are at least 800 cells), Chronic Phase (impaired immune system, yeast infections of mouth or vagina, cervical dysplasia, prolonged diarrhea, thick sores on the tongue, swollen lymph nodes, fevers, fatigue, coughs, and diarrhea. CD4 T-cell count is between 499 and 200) AIDS (no cure, there is treatment, CD4 T-cell count has fallen below 200 cells/mm^3)
