Contents of the Muscular System
- skeletal muscles
What do skeletal muscles attach to?
- Bones and cross joints
Two divisions of the human skeleton
- appendicular skeleton
- axial skeleton
Axial Skeleton
- composed of the bones down the
center of the body, including the skull, vertebral column, rib cage and sternum.
appendicular skeleton
composed of the bones of the shoulder and upper limb, and the pelvis
and lower limb.
Types of bones in the skull
- cranial and facial
Cranial bones
encase the brain
Facial bones
- give the face it’s appearance
Types of Vertebrae
- Cervical vertebrae (7)
- Thoracic (12)
- Lumbar (5)
- Sacrum (5 fused)
- Coccyx (3-5 fused)
How many pairs of ribs
- 12
Different types of ribs
- true ribs (1-7): each has costal cartilage connecting them directly to the sternum in the front of the rib cage.
- false ribs (8-12): either have an indirect connection to the sternum or no connection at all
- floating ribs (11 & 12) (no connection at all, a type of false rib)
Types of Cranial Bones
- Frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, sphenoid, and ethnoid bones.
Types of facial bones
zygomatic, maxillary, mandible, nasal, lacrimal, palatine, and vomer bones.
Unpaired bones of the skull
Frontal, occipital, shpenoid, ethmoid, mandible and vomer
Paired bones in the skull
Pariatal, temporal, zygomatic, maxillary, nasal, lacrimal, and palatine
Flexion
Involves decreasing the angle of a joint
Extension
Involves the increasing the angle of a joint.
Abduction
To move a body part away from the body
Lateral rotation
Involves rotating a body part (usually a limb) from the front of the body to the side of the body.
Medial Rotation
Involves rotating it back to the front of the body
Inversion
Has to do with the feet. When you invert your foot, you bend your ankles so that the bottoms of your feet face each other. When you evert your feet, you ben
Eversion
