Reproductive System Flashcards
Testes
make sperm via meiosis. The testes also produce testosterone, the male hormone.
Vas Defeneres
sperm travel through this tube, joins with urethra
Prostate
Gland that produces a fluid that carries sperm during ejaculation. It surrounds the urethra
Penis
Male reproductive organ
Epididymis
collects mature sperm which is eventually propelled through the vas deferens
Vasectomy
the tube is cut to prevent sperm leaving (and fertilizing an egg)
Circumcision
In circumcision, the foreskin is surgically removed, exposing the end of the penis.
Ovary
This is where the eggs are produced through cell division (MEIOSIS)
Uterus
The uterus consists of a body and a cervix. The cervix protrudes into the vagina.
The uterus maintains an environment for accepting a fertilized egg.
The fertilized ovum becomes an embryo, attaches to a wall of the uterus, creates a placenta, and develops into a fetus (gestates) until childbirth.
If no fertilized egg reaches the uterus, the lining is shed monthly in a process known as menstruation.
Fallopian Tube
a pair of tubes along which eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus.
Vagina
the muscular tube leading from the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus in women and most female mammals.
Cervix
The cervix protrudes into the vagina.
Fraternal Twins
develop from the fertilization of two individual eggs.
The babies do not look the same.
Testosterone
a steroid hormone that stimulates development of male secondary sexual characteristics, produced mainly in the testes, but also in the ovaries and adrenal cortex.
mestruation
the removal and bloody disposal of the uterus lining in a female body
barrier-method
a method of contraception using a device or preparation which prevents live sperm from reaching an ovum
placenta
an organ that develops in your uterus during pregnancy
ultrasound
an ultrasound scan, especially one of a pregnant woman to examine the fetus.
plural noun: ultrasounds
amniocentesis
the sampling of amniotic fluid using a hollow needle inserted into the uterus, to screen for developmental abnormalities in a fetus.
pap test
a test carried out on a sample of cells from the cervix to check for abnormalities that may be indicative of cervical cancer; a Pap smear.
epidural
an epidural anesthetic, used especially in childbirth to produce loss of sensation below the waist.
trimester
a period of three months, especially as a division of the duration of pregnancy.
umbilical cord
a flexible cordlike structure containing blood vessels and attaching a human or other mammalian fetus to the placenta during gestation
IUD
mall contraceptive devices that are inserted into the uterus (womb) to prevent pregnancy
